Oporto tests concepts before development to future-proof their menu

Oporto is a premium QSR brand in Australia known for its Portuguese-inspired offerings, flame-grilled chicken, original chilli sauce, and iconic Bondi Burger. With 211+ stores across Australia and one in Auckland, the brand is turning 40 next year.
“Our objective with Ideally was to validate our FY26 calendar and the product concepts within it and also test future product concepts for FY27 and beyond. We were seeking consumer validation of our concepts by understanding desirability/craveability and purchase intent.”

product concepts were tested at once.. “All the eight we tested… came back well above benchmark for the most part. So that was really validating for us that we’re on the right track,” Jasmin explained.

of the tested concepts were existing menu items, Otropo Burger, Halloumi and Chicken Burger, and the Pulled Chicken Bowl, and the results challenged assumptions. “They still tested well but they weren’t the best performing, which I found interesting… I thought they would probably test a lot better because they already existed in market.”
“I love it. I’m a big fan of the Ideally platform, a big advocate here… it's really helped with internal conversations and decision making. And the platform is easy to use”

But it wasn’t just validation, they also uncovered insights that will shape the direction of the brand. “We have a problem to solve around people perceiving our brand as just spicy… which was highlighted through the verbatim. This key consumer insight has helped strategically drive our calendar to focus more on non-spicy products.”

Before Ideally, Oporto’s testing involved store trials with customer and staff feedback. Now, they’re excited about earlier-stage validation. “We want to test even earlier… before you even develop the product. Ideally, it’s at that concept stage where we validate with consumers first.”

Jasmin said the platform setup was quick and easy: “What takes the most time is the client working out what they want to test and finalising the concepts…but uploading the content and running the rest is super quick, you get an overnight read.”

More than just speed, the platform is now helping to settle internal debates. “What I’m hoping to use this platform for in the future is when there’s a lot of opinions in the room… I can come to the table the next day and say, “hey, we’ve just asked 400 consumers overnight, and here’s what they want.”
